The Oman Cultural Complex is designed to house a variety of cultural events, and will form, in the future, the cultural arena of the Sultanate as it contains different elements that serve the country’s citizens, intellectuals and researchers in scientific and practical fields. The complex is built on an area of 400,000 square metres at Airport Heights and consists of multiple architectural components that are commensurate with its purpose while addressing its present and future needs. Complex facilities will embrace different cultural institutions including the National Documents and Archives Authority, the National Theatre, the National Library, the Children’s Library, the Literary Forum and the Youth Art Club, in addition to other services and facilities such as cafes and parks.
The National Documents and Archives Authority
The National Documents and Archives Authority is one of the cultural and architectural bodies that will be included in the Cultural Complex building. It will be built on an area of 15,300 square metres and designed according to high standards that enable the conservation of documents and protection against damage, theft, fire, natural disasters, pollution and other dangers. It will provide all relevant requirements such as a workshop for the restoration of manuscripts and documents, administrative offices for managing the building, technical affairs and documentation. There is also another building for administrative and financial affairs along with open spaces and rooms for public use.
The National Theatre
The Oman Cultural Complex will include a special building for the National Theatre, which will be built on an area of approximately 12,800 square metres. The main theatre building will accommodate more than a thousand people and will be equipped with modern equipment, in addition to administrative offices and facilities to serve visitors and staff.
The National Library
The Oman Cultural Complex will include a large building dedicated to the National Library, which will be built on an area of approximately 22,900 square metres and will be one of the basic cultural pillars in the Sultanate. It will consist of halls for exhibiting books, reading and study rooms, rooms for periodicals, maps and photographs, and a room equipped with audio devises and materials. The library will also include a section for people with special needs. Other components include a lecture hall and a hall for information technology. There will be areas for displaying historical documents and manuscripts, with special rooms attached for repairing manuscripts. There are also administrative offices and facilities to serve visitors and staff.
The Children’s Library
The Children’s Library will be housed in the main library in the Oman Cultural Complex and will contain children's literature and books that meet their needs relative to their ages and backgrounds. The Children’s Library will be attractive and include areas for book displays and reading as well as for audiovisual equipment, education halls and a room for children’s games.
The Literary Forum
The Oman Cultural Complex will also have a building dedicated to the Literary Forum, which will contain halls for lectures, seminars, a special library, and reading and computer rooms, in addition to administrative offices and the necessary facilities to serve visitors and staff.
The Youth Art Club (The Art Institute)
The Art Institute or Youth Art Club includes two halls for art galleries equipped with all the necessary safety features. The club will provide rooms for workshops, restoring and maintaining artworks, training, displaying photographs and fine art galleries, in addition to administrative offices and other facilities to serve visitors and staff.
